Marina Takes Manhattan!

What a treat!  Marina came to town for a few days, so we got to spend quality time catching up and sharing great food!

Saturday:  Marina had spent the day exploring DUMBO, so we decided to make it a low-key evening and hang out at home.  Mel made some BBQ ribs (a.k.a. reebs), we stocked up on plenty of beer, and DJ got us started playing Palace.  So addictive!

Sunday Reunion time with the Frenchie!  Carole and Marina hadn't seen each other in a while, so we all met up in the East Village for brunch.  The location we picked had way too long a wait, so we wandered around until we came upon Yuca BarWe had been there before for dinner, and were pleased to find that their brunches are equally appetizing.

Marina and Carole tried the omelets...
Mel went for scrambled eggs and sausage...
and DJ devoured the steak and eggs.
Afterward we walked off our meal for a while by venturing to Soho for a bit of shopping.  Gotta love an aimless Sunday afternoon!
Monday:  For Marina's last night in town, we wanted to try somewhere memorable so we headed to DUMBO to enjoy a meal at Bubby's Pie Company.  As soon as we walked in, we were impressed by the space itself.  It's very open and lofty with huge windows that allow diners to look out at the Manhattan skyline framed by the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge.  What a view - especially at night!  The food and drink options were equally pleasing.

DJ was the adventurous one and tried a BBQ trio.  The smoky flavor of the meat = a carnivorous pleasure.

Meanwhile, Marina tried the turkey burger...
and Mel went for the veggie burger (which had a lot more beans than expected).

And since this place has "Pie Company" in its name, we figured we couldn't leave without trying the pie.  So we ordered one slice of apple pie a la mode to share between the 3 of us.  We were wowed by the very natural flavors; it tasted like they had literally just chopped up the apple and baked it.  So nice to have a dessert that didn't leave us with sugar shock!

Oh, and a bit of gossip for the night - guess who we sat next to!  Tim Robbins, of Shawshank Redemption fame.   He seemed a bit agitated by the long wait for food (perhaps he was in a hurry), but it was still cool to have a celebrity sighting. Icing on the cake of a fabulous Brooklyn evening

Come back soon, Marina!  We miss you already!

Dinner at the Newlyweds'

Hirut invited the family to Stamford for a wonderful home-cooked meal for Manny's birthday.  Their first family dinner party as a married couple!

For appetizers, we savored a shrimp and scallop ceviche that reminded us of our fave Peruvian spot, Rocky's.  :)
Then we enjoyed penne a la vodka with shrimp alongside lobster ravioli, garlic bread, and Almaz's famous broccoli salad.  We couldn't resist having seconds!
And the night wouldn't have been complete without a bit of birthday cake, so we satisfied our sweet teeth with bites of tiramisu cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory.  Yum!

Happy Birthday to Manny, and thank you to the newlyweds for hosting such a delicious and nutritious night for us all!
