BBQ in the Burbs

As strange as it sounds, we were really craving a chance to sit outside without having to be in a public place surrounded by people.  (We love the city and all its bustle, but fume-free air and personal space are nice sometimes too.)  So we grabbed some BBQ from our favorite Fette Sau, and booked it out to Floral Park Gardens (a.k.a. the Bernardin home).  Toots and Toto provided a lovely assortment of side dishes, and we indulged in a feast and lots of fresh air!

We've decided to deem ourselves The Porch Crashers and coast our way through spring and summer by inviting ourselves over to the homes of anyone we know with outdoor space.  Clean your grills and brace yourselves!  Mel and DJ: coming soon to a porch near you.

Bacchus Bistro Brunch

It was a BEAUTIFUL weekend in Brooklyn, so we decided to venture into Carroll Gardens for brunch.  We haven't really explored this neighborhood much, and it's truly overflowing with great restaurants.  A slow stroll along Smith Street provides a sampling of places that represent nearly every cuisine in existence!

We decided to try out Bacchus Bistro because Mel was in the mood for a nice grilled steak and salad.  First things first, we really loved the decor of this place.  You feel like you're transported to Paris as soon as you walk in, with the dark wooden bar, panes of glass, and walls lined with wine bottles.  And it opens up into the most quaint (and large!) backyard patio with tables made of old wine barrels and director's chair seats.  It's spots like this (on beautiful sunny days) that remind us why we love New York.

The food didn't disappoint either.  One cool thing: if you mention that you saw Bacchus on yelp.com, they give you one free glass of wine.  So Mel went for a free Malbec, and DJ had the unlimited mimosa which had plenty of champagne.  You could actually see the bubbles!  A rarity in brunch venues.

Then we both opted for the steak sandwich, which came with perfectly salted frites.  Delicious!

Overall, we really enjoyed Bacchus Bistro.  The service was extremely friendly, the atmosphere lovely, and the food enjoyable.  And the best part: they actually take reservations for Sunday brunch - another rarity in the city.  For all of the above reasons, we certainly shall return!

bartaco bonanza

We spent the night in Stamford to have a chance to catch up with Manny and Hirut.  Their area has soooo many cute restaurants and cafes all within walking distance, so the sky was the limit when choosing where to eat for dinner.  We decided on bartaco, a trendy new place with - you guessed it - tacos galore.

The decor from outside to inside is fabulously whimsical.  You feel like you've stepped into a Nautica ad with all the blue and white stripes and perfectly sanded wood booths.  Hirut and Mel particularly enjoyed the fact that the booths are set high off the ground, so adults can have the fun of swinging their legs under the table.  :)

The way the place runs is pretty interesting, too.  Instead of having a server constantly interrupt your conversation to see how you're doing, they tend to leave you alone and let paper do the talking.  There's a carousel at the edge of the table that has a blue firefly card to stick on the post when you want service, and menu cards that you fill out and stick on the post when you want to order.  So efficient!

On their drink menu, they boast that all cocktails are made with freshly squeezed fruit juices.  To us this sounded fabulous, so DJ and Manny decided to split a pitcher of margaritas.  They were tasty, but quite tart.  Perhaps a bit too much of a 'good fresh juice' thing.  But with a dash more syrup to sweeten the deal, the pitcher would have been perfection.

And now, of course, the food!  Manny had the clever idea of ordering the Chef's tray which provides a sample of a variety of tacos and the guacomole so we could narrow down what we would want to order more of.  Overall, the tacos (all soft-shell) were all really tasty, especially with the variety of hot sauces you can add at the table.  And the guac had a fabulous consistency and flavor - not too much onion at all!  The tamales and pickled side dishes created a great balance of spice with the taco fillings.  We really enjoyed trying all the different ones!  Will definitely come back on a hot summer night for more guac and cocktails.

Graziella's for Janna's Birthday

Hooray for Janna's birthday!
We got to spend time with the birthday girl on her actual birthday at the lovely Graziella's in Fort Greene.  This place boasts fantastic Italian cuisine and an awesome rooftop deck with views of Manhattan!  We didn't sit outside this time around (a little too chilly), but we definitely enjoyed every bite of the food.

The group started with the 3 appetizers our server highly recommended:
fried calamari, grilled octopus, and  Mediterranean Schiaciatta (brick oven flat bread stuffed with baby arugula, shaved parmesan, baby tomatoes, and topped with extra virgin olive oil).  All fabulous!

In fact, Mel enjoyed the grilled octopus so much she decided to couple an order of it with tomato-mozzarella salad to make a meal.  Delightful!

DJ tried the special of the day: fettucine with duck raagu.  So good.

Overall we were really impressed with Graziella's menu, and we look forward to coming back when it's warmer to enjoy one of the brick oven pizzas on the rooftop deck.  :)

Hangin' with the Harrises

It was a fun night out in NYC with Ibee and Uncle Stan and the lively atmosphere of Pio Pio in Hell's Kitchen!
We wanted to take them out somewhere festive, and we both remembered really enjoying this Pio Pio a while back.  And we're glad we returned!  The food was delicious, the service was prompt and friendly, and the sangria was light and refreshing.  It can get a bit loud at times (perhaps the acoustics amplify table convos), but if you don't mind leaning in a bit to chat then it's all good.  :)

DJ tried the steak (a bit too much teriyaki sauce, but the meat was cooked perfectly)...

Mel and Ibee shared the Chicken Pio, and Uncle Stan tried the paella.

And just when we thought Ibee and Uncle Stan couldn't have any more wedding surprises in store for us, they presented us with a beautiful framed photo and amazing album/scrapbook of all the photos Ibee took.
Oh, how they spoil us!  We are so lucky and definitely feel the love!
