Meet our New Sous - iDevice

Our kitchen has a new sous chef named iDevice, and he has rocked our culinary world.

Backstory:  One day we had to go to the Apple Store for some Genius Bar help, and as DJ wandered the aisles he noticed a new gadget: a cooking thermometer that connects to your smartphone and beeps your phone when the food is ready.  He was super pumped by the concept since he loves gadgets, but Mel questioned whether it was really worth the price.  Isn't it just as easy to get off the couch and check the oven rather than waiting for a beep?  Hadn't we been doing just fine with regular old thermometers?

Apparently not, because she is now the biggest fan of this iDevice.  It is, in a word, revolutionary.  The beauty of it goes beyond just beeping your phone when the food is done.  Yes, that's cool and all.  But the real best part is that the app that goes with the device has pre-programmed settings for every type of meat.  So as soon as you put the probe in a protein, a menu pops up allowing you to select exactly what type of dish you're cooking and whether you want it rare, medium, well, etc.  Once you make your selections, the app knows exactly what USDA-recommended temperature the food should be, shows you a graph as the temp goes up or down, and notifies you when you're 10 degrees away from being done.  No more Googling "What temperature should _____ be?"  No more worrying about undercooked chicken or burnt beef.  ::HAPPY DANCE::  You can also program in your own temperatures for any dishes you make that aren't already included in the app.  Brilliant.

Since getting the iDevice, all our meat has been cooked perfectly - never burned, always juicy.  We're not really sure what we would do without it!
