    Quinoa Lasagna - O.M.G.

Though Mel has been trying to cut back on the amount of time she spends on Facebook, it's hard to resist the random nuggets of info one can glean from a News Feed.  Including recipes!!  One day an old elementary school friend posted this link to a recipe for quinoa lasagna and it looked good enough to try.

The recipe is so simple, it's almost a joke.

You cook your quinoa (we decided to substitute some of the water for a cider beer to add some flavor).

While it's cooking, you chop up the fresh basil (smells SO scrumptious).

Once most of the water has evaporated from the quinoa and you see the little steam holes popping up, you take the quinoa off the stove and pour it into a bowl.

Add your basil (the recipe says only 2 tbsp. but we put a ton more because we love the taste), marinara sauce, and shredded cheese and mix thoroughly.  We added some salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes to taste.

Place neatly in a baking dish, top with the remaining basil and shredded cheese, and bake.

The end results: Mel was so bowled over by the amazing flavor that she threw the potholders down on the floor and did a victory dance around the kitchen.  We will DEFINITELY be making this instead of pasta lasagna REGULARLY.  In a word: amazing.

    Take-Out from Taco Mix

DJ is always on the quest for awesome Mexican food.  If he suddenly says he has a food craving, 9 times out of 10 you can be sure it's for Mexican.  He came across an article in Time Out NY listing the 30 Best Tacos, and realized one of the spots is super close by.  So on a Saturday afternoon, we made a quick run uptown to grab some tacos from Taco Mix.

The spot itself is super tiny.  Just enough room for a row of people to stand at the counter placing orders while another row of people stands behind them at another counter to eat.  Nothing out of the ordinary for small delis across the city.  But because this place has such a stellar reputation, there's rarely a break in the crowd.  (Thankfully you can also order through the window from outside.)

All the reviews say the "Al Pastor" (pork) tacos are the best, so we got a bunch of those to-go and raced back home to enjoy them while they were still hot.

Verdict:  totally worth the trip!  The pork was seasoned beautifully and perfectly tender, the taco shells were fresh and thick enough to hold up to the sauce, and the toppings (including fresh pineapple and raw onions) really brought all the flavors together.  Considering how close this place is, there's no doubt we'll be returning when taco cravings hit.

    Second Anniversary = Foodie Flashback!

Two years of wedded bliss is certainly something to celebrate!  DJ had the brilliant idea of trying Degustation: a restaurant with a stellar reputation for its Iberian and French influenced cuisine, very similar to the food we sampled on our honeymoon adventure in the Basque region.

One of the fun elements of Degustation is the dining area.  All patrons are seated around the cooking area so you can see the chefs at work.

It reminded us slightly of the concept of pintxos, where people sit around a bar sampling small plates.  So we were excited to see how the flavor profiles compared to our European experience.  Overall, we were definitely impressed though a few dishes stood out as our clear favorites.

    the full menu
    (zoom in to see details)

    Croquetas
(served atop delicious cream; smooth rich center; very similar to croquettes we had in Spain)

Brussels Sprouts with Funyuns and Cashews
(awesome concept, though DJ would have liked a hint of sweet [perhaps maple?] to balance out the strength of the char on the sprout leaves)

    Crisp Octopus
(one of our favorites; the Thai curry sauce was PHENOMENAL and the octopus was grilled perfectly)

    Scallop with "Paella" Garnish
(another one of our favorites; the "paella" had a fabulous hint of citrus to balance the savory)

    Foie Gras
(grilled!  we'd never had it prepared this way and quite enjoyed it; also enjoyed that it was paired with celery rather than bread because the light, refreshing nature of the celery really let the foie flavors be the star of the dish)

Apple, Lavender, Spicy Oats and Granita
(the "modern" movement in a dessert: the "apple" was actually in frozen green granita form and the lavender flavor was concentrated in the gelatin cubes; very light and refreshing)

Degustation is definitely a fun night out.  The food is playful while still remaining true to classic flavor profiles, and the setting is obviously a conversation starter in and of itself.  However, one downside we discovered to sitting around the kitchen is that you see everything the chefs are doing - the good and the questionable.

While we sat mesmerized by the chefs' skill at navigating their small work area and creating beautiful plates, we noticed that they didn't pay much attention to hygiene.  The chef working closest to us would pull out raw scallops and arrange them on the grill, then move the lamb belly to a cooling rack, then cut bread and put it in the oven to toast - all of this with grace and precision, but without washing his hands in between.  Another interesting trick: the chefs would put a metal rod into the meat and touch it to their faces to be sure it was the right temperature.  But occasionally we noticed they would use the same rod they'd just touched to their faces to test the temperature of the second piece of meat on a plate.  Now, we are 99.9% sure that all of this happens in most restaurant kitchens when we're not looking.  But as DJ said: if you're going to have a restaurant where you know people are watching your every move, you might want to take the time to be super diligent with cleanliness.  It didn't ruin our experience in any way; the food was still delicious and brought back memories of our fabulous foodie fun in Spain.  But we might not be running back, and we will be sure to offer a disclaimer when folks ask if we recommend it.

Cheers to two wonderful years of marriage and food adventures, and to all the delicious years ahead!

    Betony Bliss

Rather than deal with overcrowded restaurants and overpriced prix fixe menus on Valentine's Day, we decided to celebrate love over a calm, quiet lunch on Monday instead.  Knowing that some of the best restaurants in the city have very reasonable lunch deals, DJ figured it would be perfect time to splurge on an experience at Betony.  Best.  Idea.  Ever.

Betony is located on one of the busiest midtown roads, but the moment you walk in the door all the noise and bustle dissipates and you can easily forget about the city outside and focus on the joy of fine dining.  DJ described it as: "Lord of the Rings rustic with a twinge of Cloud City [Star Wars reference]."

Everyone we met was extremely welcoming and attentive, and the crowd was the perfect blend of casual yet sophisticated.  Folks were dressed in unpretentious jeans, but you could tell everyone had respect for the fact that we were about to enjoy a great meal.

After we sat down, we started out with cocktails to go with delicious warm rolls seasoned with rye and anise.  DJ's drink of choice (the Ti'Punch) was so good we deemed it worthy of its own photo.  We might even return just to sit at the bar and order it.  You could taste the sweet essence of the rum so perfectly because it wasn't overpowered by the hint of lime juice and sugar cane syrup that gave it a refreshing spark.

For appetizers, Mel enjoyed the Young Lettuces with Green Goddess dressing (perfectly light start to the meal!)...

and DJ savored the Chicken Liver Mousse (he quickly deemed it "a ball of tear-inducing flavor" [that's a good thing]).

For the main course,  Mel went for her favorite:  Seared Diver Scallops (we both agreed they may have been the best scallops we've ever had, and Mel literally cleaned the sauce from the plate with her roll)...

and DJ had the Poached Lobster (positively delectable).

Just when we thought they couldn't wow us any further, the extremely unique dessert options were presented.  Of course, we couldn't resist.

Mel had the Honey Crisp Apple (brilliantly combined with cheddar cheese and pastry)...

and DJ tried the Dark Chocolate (it looks and cuts like a cake, but it's actually ice cream!).

Truthfully, if we could take up residence in Betony and eat there daily we would.  This place is worthy of all the praise it has received.  We look forward to returning to try even more of their impressive menu.

    Vamos a Viale

We were visiting the Haile-Mariam crew in Connecticut, and DJ's dad was kind enough to take us all out for lovely dinner at Viale.

This family-owned restaurant in Fairfield is a great refuge from the various chain restaurants serving Italian cuisine for the masses.  The decor is very homey, and the staff are very welcoming as you settle in for some comfort food.

What we didn't know is that the serving sizes are quite generous.  We each ordered our own pasta entrees and quickly realized we could have ordered just a couple of them and shared around the table.  But it was fun to sample a lot of the different dishes.

    cheese and olives
(a great start to any meal!)

    fried calamari
(could have used a little more seasoning)

    gnocchi
    (delicious fresh mozarrella on top)

penne a la vodka with spinach
(pasta was a nice al dente and the sauce was not overpowering)

In addition to these, we also sampled the chicken parmesan (tasty) and grilled steak (prepared nicely; apparently they are known for their steaks).

To close things off on a sweet note, Hirut and Manny got the tiramisu (which they said was delicious), and Mel and DJ tried the "peach": peach-flavored pastry filled with cream.

Overall, we really enjoyed our time with family at Viale.  You can tell that it's a place that has been in the neighborhood for a long time and treasures loyal customers.  So while one might say their decor and recipes could use a bit of updating, no one can discount the value of that sense of community.

    Brass Monkey... That Drunken Munkey

We recently noticed new restaurant construction near our house (not unusual these days).  On our way home one day, we realized they had finally opened with a name that's bound to intrigue: Drunken Munkey (not a typo).  So on a quiet Sunday afternoon, we had a chance to check it out.

The focus at Drunken Munkey is Indian cuisine and fabulous cocktails.  At first they were only open for dinner.  But as luck would have it, the afternoon we went was the first weekend they started offering brunch hours.  Hooray!

This place definitely has a neighborhood-spot feel to it.  It's relatively small with a welcoming bar and new decor made to look old and lived-in, as if you're visiting the home of a friend's parents who make awesome food.  Once you're settled in to your seat, you're warmly greeted by the friendly server and have a moment to look up and notice that the chandeliers and candle holders are indeed monkeys.  Cute.  :)

We started off with the chicken samosas (excellent with great dipping sauces).

Then DJ went for the butter chicken (superb!)...

and Mel tried the Lamb Biryani (a new addition to the menu; like a lamb pot pie with tender lamb and spicy rice nestled under a shell of buttery naan - yummmmmm).

To end on a sweet note, we tried another new addition to the menu: the Rum Cricket Ball, a chocolate cake taken to the next level with a unique blend of spices.  Definitely amaze-balls.

We pretty much knew after the first few bites that we would return to Drunken Munkey.  We are so glad it is in the neighborhood because we plan to keep going back until we've tried the whole menu!

    *   *   *   *   *   *   *
True to our word, we returned to Drunken Munkey with Brandon and Ladell to sample some more of the cocktails and dinner menu.  The second visit confirmed that this place is fabulous.  The drinks are on the pricier end: totally on par with NYC prices these days, but not what you'd consider a bargain for a quick cheap happy hour after work.  But in this case, the drinks are actually worth it because the bartenders are extremely attentive.  We sat at the bar this time around and got to know Brennan, who was the mixologist for the night.  After we ordered our first round to rave reviews and chatted with him a bit, he started saying to us: "I think I know what you'd like.  Let me surprise you."  And he would proceed to mix up concoctions on the spot that were really fabulous.  When asked what was in them, he'd say, "I can't tell you exactly.  I just made it up."  That kind of attention to one's craft is what makes a bar experience memorable and will keep us coming back for more!

We also snacked on a few food items from the dinner menu:

    Paani Puri
crispy flour puffs, aloo & chick-pea chaat, tamarind mint water
(these were highly recommended but we weren't the hugest fans because the filling is cold; you're supposed to eat them in one bite, which means your mouth is rushed with chilly, spicy, minty water -  not quite what we were looking for on a snowy winter night; but this could be refreshing on a summer afternoon)

    Lamb Seekh Kababs
skewered hand ground spinach lamb, mint chutney
    (excellent!)

     Lamb Shank Rogan Josh
braised lamb, seasoning spices, tomato curry sauce
    (superb!)

No doubt about it:  we'll be going here OFTEN!

    Slow Cooker Baby Back Ribs

Super Bowl Sunday = having fun with party food!

Fresh Direct was running a sale on baby back ribs, so that Sunday's home cooking experiment was a no-brainer.  We found a super simple slow cooker baby back ribs recipe online, and went to town.

Seriously - couldn't have been easier.  We followed the recipe to the letter, and wound up with delicious, tender ribs falling off the bone.  In fact, next time we may subtract a little more slow cooking time to keep the meat on the bone before it goes in the oven.  But as for flavor, no change needed.  This recipe is a winner!  DJ said he wants to make them any time we have a party.  :)

Slow Cooker Red Beans and Rice

Mel has had many attempts at making proper rice and beans, but cooking perfectly separated rice continues to elude her.  Some have told her the key is a rice cooker.  Others have said it's essential to have the right kind of pot.  Either way, it is a challenge she will continue to take on until there is victory!  So when she saw a recipe for Slow Cooker Red Beans and Rice, she thought she'd see if maybe her favorite kitchen appliance could be the key to finally mastering this dish.

The recipe is extremely easy to follow, and requires very little prep work.  We had high hopes as the wonderful spicy aroma filled the apartment.  And in the end, the taste was delicious.  But the consistency was quite sticky.

We'll call it a win for flavor, but the quest continues for making the perfect pot of rice and beans.  To be continued...

    Lush Lunch and Lavo

Time to celebrate beautiful Liz on her birthday!  Shana planned an awesome group gathering for lunch at Lavo.
The champagne flowed as we all wished Liz well and enthusiastically ordered a variety of items.  With typical brunch items, pizzas, and pastas as options, we wound up with quite the spread on the table!

Delightful from savory start to sweet Fried Oreo finish!  :)

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, LIZ!
