Homemade Hummus

We had some lovely dried chickpeas left in the bag after making chickpea curry.  It didn't seem like enough to make a whole other batch of curry, so Mel was trying to think of something fun to do with it.  Initially she was going to bake them up for some chickpea poppers, but it has been too hot to even consider turning on the oven.  And then she realized:  HUMMUS!  Mel's been a big fan of hummus ever since her cousin, Aman, introduced her to the delight of eating it with pita and a dollop of olive oil.  DJ really enjoys it too, so it seemed like a fun experiment to try.  Why eat store-bought when you can have homemade?

So the chickpeas were soaked overnight, boiled for 2 hours until soft, and blended in the food processor until smooth.  After adding 2 tbs. of olive oil, salt, pepper, paprika, and a dash of hot peppers -- WAHOO!  Tastes just as good as the manufactured brands we've tried, nothing artificial added, and nothing from a can!  Definitely a home cooking win.

  1. Doggonnit, you two are being very adventurous! I'm totally inspired :-)

I started making more use of chickpeas in the last few months, and it's been going pretty well, but I've mostly been a poor planner and used the canned variety.

  2. Woo hoo!! Thanks, Alex! :) Glad we could inspire! Yeah, it's hard to move away from cans, but the dried chickpeas in a bag are surprisingly easy to work with. And I think they actually taste better. Please share recipes!!
